I got issues. You got issues. We all got issues.
I have recognized/the Holy Spirit has convicted me, recently that I have been demonstrating a critical spirit by letting harsh words and judgmental comments fly… Can anyone else relate?? It’s especially bad when I am around those friends and family members whom I feel most comfortable with that I really let my true thoughts escape through my mouth…I mean if my own life isn’t convicting enough, tonight I was reading through some of my favorite blogs and found these two articles on taming the tongue!
Jesus sure did have a word for people like me:
Matthew 12:34 “You offspring of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil (wicked)? For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Luke 6:45 “The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart produces what is upright (honorable and intrinsically good), and the evil man out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Sassy, huh? The truth hurts. But hard words make soft people!!
In talking with several students recently, we concluded that social media only makes this issue worse!! A brilliant student leader, Laura, said, “We think it’s okay to make social media an extension of our brains!” This only spells disaster for our testimonies and for God’s Kingdom. My new favorite line is, “Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth TWEETS!!!” I am trying to call myself and my girls to a higher standard or communicating, because I hear Jesus calling us to it!!
Okay, well all this is to say that if any of you would like to join me, I am seeking the Lord and asking Him to purify my heart so that what is produced is something worth saying! Something lovely, pure, right, true, edifying, etc.
Growing up, my dad had us memorize Ephesians 4:29 to the the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”…It went a little something like this, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. According to their needs that it may benefit those who listen!”
Who’s with me in make this our daily standard of speech?!? I think Thumper’s Daddy would agree with my Daddy and our Heavenly Father as well!
