About Us

Hey, there!

I’m not sure what brought you to our little corner of the World Wide Web, but I am sure glad you came. Let’s just pretend we are close friends already, okay?

I tend to write once or twice each week here about life at the Hurdle house which includes, but is not limited to: foodfaithfun moments spent mothering two (miraculously adopted) children and helpful ways to be a boss at life. I hope you’ll join us on our wild adventure of following Him and loving them!

Joel & Kitty About Graphic-02

Long, long ago, even before Facebook, Joel and I (unbeknownst to each other) took teams of students to do Hurricane Katrina Relief work. What we thought was just a camp-type crush for the week, became our #crushforlife.

We were married in August of 2007, spent an amazing 5 years doing ministry in Columbia, South Carolina and after adopting our two precious children, moved to Oxford, Mississippi to continue serving as full-time missionaries with Campus Crusade for Christ. (To read the longer version, click HERE. Or to listen via podcast click HERE.)

This blog is more of a memoir of family life and ministry, than a trophy case of happy people sitting around smiling for pictures. We hope you’ll see Jesus through our good, bad and humorously ugly.

I’d love to get to know you a little more and learn ways I can serve you through this online space. Whether it’s infertilityadoptionmarriageministrymotherhood or just the mundane, I’d love to hear more about your story and how we can walk together through this beautifully broken world.

So, what brought you here and how can we journey together? Email me at kitty(dot)hurdle(at)cru(dot)org or click the connect button in the sidebar.

  1. Thanks Ashley!! As you can tell I am a bit addicted to blogging…once students come back we shall see how I keep up :) Congrats to your hubby!

  2. Hi, kitty and Joel. I’m not sure this will go thru, so this is just a test. I am so grateful that you all are keeping us up with your lives thru the blog. It is a great way to catch up when we have time and you may not have time to share. Prayers and love, dad

  3. I feel I need to share with you how God uses everything for His purpose. After meeting the two of you last week I was called on at the last minute to lead my Sunday School class. The lesson was from a book our entire church is using called “One Month to Live: Thirty Days to a No Regrets Life” by Kerry and Chris Shook. The second chapter is on living with passion. I shared with them the passion for Christ’s message that I observed in both you and Joel. Everyone wanted the link to your blog. Keep up the God work and my He bless you fully.

  4. Hey Joel and Kitty,
Keep on keeping on. The reward is great, but the journey is sometimes long. However, Proverbs 3:5-6 is always true! Thanks for the updates and the kind notes!
Watch out … God is at work!
    You are in my prayers,

  6. Just found you on Pintrest. Thanks for posting and hope you will post more recipes. With this economy it is good to have new ideas for saving money and still eating good. God Bless you and your family!! Hotty Toddy.

  7. God knew I needed this, to read your blog and your story of hope and family. My husband and I are dealing with infertility and have recently made the decision to adopt through DSS. We are anxioulsy awaiting our classes to begin this fall and have our prelim home study next week. Reading about your journey has been such a blessing and a reminder that He is always good and always has a plan. I know the coming months will be difficult but I your blog shows the light at the end of what has been a long, dark tunnel.
    Thank you!

  9. Hi, Kitty!
Found your blog through Pinterest. I want to encourage you in your ministry to college students through the campus ministry. You may not hear from the parent’s point of view much, but here goes… My eldest son Madison started at the University of Montevallo, AL in 2011. It was his first substantial time away from home, no car the first year, totally different way of life and completely independent of his family for the greater part. If it had not been for the Baptist Campus Ministry, I don’t think he would have made it. It was a comfort for me to know that he had good, Christian people to spend time with, to look out for him and to care for him in our absence. What you do has so much value that you probably don’t even recognize. Thank you, thank you, thank you for serving the Lord in this capacity. I have prayed for you! God Bless!
